Pilates is an exercise method geared towards developing your body’s awareness, flexibility and core strength in order to give you balance and graceful movement. Developed in the 1920s by Joseph Pilates, the method was originally designed and intended as part of the prisoners of war’s rehabilitation program.
It was later found that Pilates greatly benefitted those who were seeking a higher level of physical fitness and thus, the method evolved to what it is today. Pilates advocates succeeded in enhancing and refining the original method and created several approaches, including Stott which is designed to rebalance joints of muscles and restore the spine’s natural curves.
Along with the method’s evolution is the incorporation of equipment which became an integral part of the exercise.
Pilates gear is designed to develop your core strength by producing the resistance that your muscles overcome. That is why it is important that you choose wisely the gear that you will be using when practicing Pilates at home or at the gym.
Basic Pilates Gear for Beginners:
Apparel – Comfort, style and fit. These are the three basic factors that you should consider when choosing clothing for Pilates. The choice that you will make can create a difference between a good and a great workout. The pants ideal for Pilates should fit snugly on your hips and waist, with a slight slit or flare at the legs. Choose fabric that provides a good fit and stretches with your body. Most common fabric combinations are spandex, cotton, polyester and nylon.
Chair – a basic gear in any Pilates studio, it serves as a resistance exercise machine. A typical chair looks like a box with spring contraption on one side that is pressed for resistance. A modern chair features four or five springs which you can press down with your legs or arms. This apparatus strengthens the lower back, shoulder and buttocks and enhances neuromuscular coordination.
Mat – this is an important gear if you are going to practice Pilates at home. Mats are available in various colors, sizes and styles. An ideal size is half an inch thick and should be firm. Soft mats are not good because they may not effectively support your balance and alignment.
Reformer – this exercise resistance apparatus allows you to work precisely your muscles to develop core strength, flexibility and good alignment.
Rebounder – a popular Pilates apparatus that can help stimulate your metabolism, strengthen your heart and aids in oxygen circulation.
Ring – this is a tool that requires squeezing both sides together to create a well-toned chest, shoulders and arms.
Ball – this tool increases the exercise’s difficulty by adding leverage or balance challenges.
Lastly, instructional Pilates DVDs are available if you want to do your exercise at home. You can buy them and so are other Pilates gear online, such as SHOP.COM.
